In Nairobi, Kenya’s bustling capital, children are captivated by the sight of robots gliding among human waiters, delivering freshly prepared meals to diners in a futuristic cafe. This unique establishment, named the Robot Cafe, has become a popular attraction in East Africa’s tech hub, known as The Silicone Savannah. The cafe owner, Mohammed Abbas, made the decision to invest in these preprogrammed robots after experiencing similar robotic service in Asia and Europe.

The three robots at the cafe, named Claire, R24, and Nadia, are equipped with trays to carry plates of food to customers. While they are preprogrammed to greet customers with phrases like “Your order is ready, Welcome,” they are not designed to engage in full conversations. Instead, customers must press an exit button after retrieving their food from the robot’s tray. The robots are controlled by human waiters through an application on an iPad, demonstrating a blend of technology and traditional service.

Despite the presence of robots in the cafe, human waiters remain an essential part of the operation. Customers who prefer not to use the online ordering option can place their orders with human waiters, who then deliver the food to the robots’ trays. Additionally, waiters serve drinks in person, highlighting the importance of human interaction in the hospitality industry.

While the introduction of robots in the service industry may raise concerns about automation replacing human jobs, the cafe’s manager, John Kariuki, emphasizes that robots cannot fully replace human waiters. He points out that the cost of acquiring and maintaining robots is high, making them an impractical solution for businesses looking to save money. Edith Ojwang, a hospitality industry expert, echoes this sentiment, noting that there is a place for both robotic and human service in the industry. The diverse preferences of clients allow for a coexistence between robotic efficiency and human warmth in the hospitality sector.

As Nairobi’s tech industry continues to flourish, the Robot Cafe stands out as a symbol of innovation and modernity. While the introduction of robots in service may spark discussions about the future of the workforce, the cafe’s success demonstrates that a balance between technology and human touch is essential.
