Apple recently reached a tentative collective bargaining contract with the first unionized company store in the country. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ Coalition of Organized Retail Employees, representing employees at a retail location in Maryland, announced a three-year deal with the company. The agreement includes a 10% increase in pay and offers other benefits to workers. However, the approval of roughly 85 employees at the store located in Towson, Baltimore suburb, is required, with a vote scheduled for Aug. 6.

The union’s negotiating committee expressed satisfaction with the tentative agreement, stating that it gives members a voice in their futures and is a strong first step towards further progress. They emphasized the potential to build on this success in other Apple stores. Meanwhile, Apple has yet to comment on the matter, leaving the final decision in the hands of the employees.

The Maryland store is one of only two unionized Apple sites in the country. Employees voted in favor of the union back in June 2022. Subsequently, workers at a second Apple location in Oklahoma City also unionized with the Communications Workers of America. However, the second store has not finalized a contract with Apple. This development marks a significant shift in labor relations within the tech giant’s retail stores.

The unionization of Apple store employees adds to a series of high-profile victories for labor unions in recent years. Electing to unionize, workers have successfully negotiated better pay and benefits at various companies, including Amazon, Chipotle, and Starbucks. However, the challenge lies in securing contracts that reflect these gains for the long term.

Apple’s collective bargaining agreement with its first unionized company store signifies a step towards giving retail employees a stronger voice in their working conditions. The success of this agreement could pave the way for similar initiatives in Apple stores nationwide, potentially reshaping the landscape of labor relations within the tech industry.
