Researchers from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and The University of Waterloo have come together to create a revolutionary device that utilizes Augmented Reality (AR) technology to improve navigation for visually impaired individuals.
Led by Prof. Allen Cheong and Prof. Ben Thompson, the research project “Augmented Reality Obstacle Detection” (ObstAR) aims to develop an AR-based navigation device that reduces the reliance on conventional assistive tools such as canes or assistance from others. The project focuses on developing tailored route navigation solutions to meet the diverse needs of visually impaired individuals.

The device integrates a suite of advanced algorithms for obstacle avoidance navigation, object recognition, scene recognition, text recognition, and gesture recognition. By identifying specific areas of interest (AOIs) like traffic lights and zebra crossings, the device offers personalized guidance to users based on their environment familiarity.
