In response to these pressing concerns, institutions like Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) are pioneering technological advancements to enhance firefighting capabilities and improve urban resilience.
Recently, PolyU hosted the 2nd International Smart Firefighting Workshop, called SureFire 2024, that gathered over 70 experts from around the globe. The focus was clear: to address emergent urban fire threats and refine smart firefighting techniques. Led by Professors Asif Usmani and Huang Xinyan, this workshop represents a critical aspect of the “SureFire: Smart Urban Resilience and Firefighting” initiative. Central to their research is the development of the SureFire System, a technologically advanced framework that employs data networks for real-time urban hazard monitoring.
This innovative system aids in the collection and analysis of vast amounts of data related to fire safety in built environments. By harnessing artificial intelligence (AI), the framework provides continuous assessments of potential hazards while also offering predictive insights that could be crucial for effective decision-making during emergencies.
As structures become more intricate and high-rise buildings proliferate, the dynamics of fire incidents are evolving. Global statistics highlight an alarming uptick in fire occurrences within these types of buildings. Fire safety research presented during the SureFire workshop explored various dimensions, such as improvements in fire design, management of thermal risks—particularly from battery systems—and the innovative use of AI in predicting fire events.

During an active fire incident, the digital twin not only maps the ongoing situation but uses predictive analytics to project how the fire may evolve. This foresight is invaluable, aiding firefighting efforts and facilitating the evacuation of building occupants more efficiently and safely.
The SureFire team has rigorously tested its system in various environments, from tunnels to high-rise structures, recording results that showcase remarkable accuracy—over 90% in forecasting fire behavior within a critical window of 1 to 3 minutes. Dr. Huang pointed out that this technology could be integral to future urban infrastructures, predicting a significant enhancement in public safety and emergency responsiveness.
The research team is actively collaborating with property management firms, both locally and internationally, to implement the SureFire system across varied infrastructures including metro stations and towering buildings. Additionally, advancements such as a Smart Dynamic Exit Sign system assist occupants during evacuations, guiding them to safety amidst chaos.
The innovative strides taken by Dr. Huang and his team don’t stop with systems for human safety. They are also dedicated to developing the next generation of autonomous firefighting robots. These robots can assist in significantly reducing risks to firefighters, thereby aiming for a future where firefighting efforts can be automated, leading to casualty-free operations.
