Water testing company SimpleLab conducted a study to analyze the chemical levels in various sources of drinking water in the San Francisco Bay area. This study comes at a time when concerns about the safety of tap water have been on the rise due to reports of contaminants in different regions of the United States. The team at SimpleLab aimed to provide valuable insights into the quality of drinking water consumed by residents in the Bay Area.

Comparing Different Sources

The team analyzed 100 samples of bottled water, 603 samples of tap water, and 111 samples of household tap water filtered using a Brita filter. The results revealed that most water samples met federal drinking water health standards. However, they also found significant differences in chemical levels between filtered and bottled water compared to water straight from the tap.

One of the main findings of the study was the presence of trihalomethanes in all three water sources. Trihalomethanes are released when chlorine is used to disinfect water and have been associated with various health issues, including liver damage, developmental delays, and an increased risk of certain cancers. While the study mentioned that consuming small amounts of these chemicals is not likely to cause harm, the long-term effects of continuous exposure remain a concern.

The team at SimpleLab concluded that using a filter can significantly reduce the levels of harmful chemicals in tap water. They highlighted that filtered water, along with bottled water, had lower chemical levels compared to unfiltered tap water. Additionally, they emphasized that filters not only improve the taste of water but also provide an added layer of protection for consumers.
