NASA’s Perseverance Rover has recently left Mount Washburn behind and has successfully arrived at its next destination, Bright Angel on Mars. The rover has encountered an unusual type of rock that has been dubbed as ‘popcorn rock’ by scientists. This discovery is another piece of evidence that points towards the existence of water in the Jezero Crater.

Perseverance’s primary mission on Mars is focused on uncovering signs of ancient life. This includes searching for fossilized evidence of past life forms and understanding the conditions that could have supported life. The decision to explore Jezero Crater was because of its rich history as an ancient paleolake containing sediments and unique geological features.

While en route to Bright Angel, Perseverance encountered a challenging boulder field that slowed down its progress significantly. The route planning team had to carefully navigate through rough terrain, utilizing both images and the rover’s autopilot mode, AutoNav, to overcome obstacles along the way.

Upon reaching Bright Angel, Perseverance’s cameras captured images of light-toned rocks that caught the attention of mission personnel. These rocks were found to be densely packed with spherical features, earning them the nickname of ‘popcorn rocks’. Additionally, the presence of mineral veins in the rocks suggests that water once flowed through these formations.

Geologists are fascinated by the unique features of the ‘popcorn rocks’ and are eager to analyze the minerals present in them. Perseverance will continue to investigate Bright Angel further, using its instruments to study the rocks’ chemistry. The decision to collect samples for potential return to Earth will be based on the findings from this analysis.

Once Perseverance completes its exploration at Bright Angel, it will continue its journey southwards, crossing Neretva Vallis to reach its next destination: Serpentine Rapids. The rover’s mission on Mars is far from over, as it continues to unravel the mysteries of the Red Planet and pave the way for future exploration and potential human missions.
